Headers and footers can be added to the slides in PowerPoint. While footers are natural in presentations, headers may not be obvious at first. Typically, the slide title is the main slide's header; however, when printing out handouts, a distinct heading would be quite handy.

The steps for adding header and footer information to slides are as follows.

Step 1: Select the Header & Footer menu item from the Insert ribbon.

Step 2: There are two tabs in the Header and Footer dialogue: the Slide tab and the Notes and Handouts tab.

Step 3: From the Slide tab, you can add details to the slide footer.

1. Time and date – 
   1. In the footer, include the date and time. 
   2. Enter the date and time in the format you choose.
   3. Use a fixed number or set the footer to update automatically.
2. Slide Number – Add the slide number to every slide in the footer.
3. Footer – Add text to the bottom of every slide. Examples of this include confidentiality clause or copyright clause.
4. Don’t show on the title slide – This can be used to decide whether the footer information shows up on the title slide or not.

Step 4: From the Notes and Handouts menu, you may add the details to the handouts.

1. Time and date – 
   1. In the footer, include the date and time. 
   2. Enter the date and time in the format you choose.
   3. Use a fixed number or set the footer to update automatically.
2. Header – Add information at the top of every page in the document.
3. Page Number – Add the page number to every slide in the ppt.
4. Footer – Add text to the bottom of every slide. Examples of this include confidentiality clause or copyright clause. 

You can see the position where the detail is inserted in the preview area when you tick either of the header and footer checkboxes in either tab.
