Weak AI or Narrow AI:
Narrow is an AI type that is capable of performing a dedicated action with intelligence. It is the most common and currently used type of AI in the world of artificial intelligence today. This type of AI cannot perform beyond its limitations since it is only trained to perform one single task and hence termed as weak AI. It fails in undetermined ways when it is forced to perform beyond its limits. Apple's Siri can be considered an example of a Narrow AI, but Siri operates with a limited pre-defined range of functions. IBM's Watson supercomputer is also a Narrow AI since it is using an Expert System technique encapsulated with machine learning and natural language processing. Chess, suggestions on e-commerce sites, self-driving cars, speech recognition, and image recognition are some examples of Narrow artificial intelligence.
General AI:
General artificial intelligence is an AI that performs intellectual actions with human-like efficiency. The primary purpose of general AI is to develop a system that can be smarter and think like a human brain on its own. There are currently o such systems available that can be categorized under general AI and can perform any operation as perfect as humans. Researchers and industry experts across the world are currently focused on developing systems with general AI. It might take a little while before such systems with high efficiency can be developed.
Super AI:
Super AI systems are machines capable of surpassing human intelligence and can perform any assigned tasks more efficiently than humans with cognitive properties. It is an advanced outcome of general artificial intelligence. The key properties of a strong AI are the ability to think, reason, solve problems, make decisions, design, and plan, learn, and communicate. Although it is still a hypothetical concept, it can be achieved sooner with such technological development and benefit humans considerably.
Based on Functionality
Reactive Machines:
The most basic type of artificial intelligence is purely reactive machines. These systems do not store data or previous records for future references. These systems focus on present problems and react with the scenario's best possible operation. IBM's Deep Blue system and Google's AlphoGo are examples of reactive artificial systems.
Limited Memory:
Machines with limited memory can store previous records or data for a short while, and these systems use this stored data for a limited time for determined purposes. Self-driven cars are the best example of limited memory systems since the self-driven cars can store the recent speed of nearby cars, the distance of the other cars, speed limit, and other data to navigate the road.
Theory of Mind: In AI, the theory of mind is a system capable of understanding human emotions, people, beliefs, and also capable of interacting socially as humans do. These systems are not in use, nor are they developed yet, but industry experts and researchers are putting efforts and ideas into developing such intelligent systems.
Self-Awareness:
Self-awareness artificial intelligent machines are the future of AI and related industries. These machines will be very intelligent, have their own understanding, sentiments, and self-awareness. These can be smarter than human intelligence. Although these machines do not exist in reality, it is possible to emerge in the future.
