With the number of advancements taking place in the tech industry in recent years, upskilling to keep up with these trends is extremely important. Read further to learn about Ramya Swaminathan’s journey with Great Learning’s PGP Data Science and Business Analytics Course in her own words.
I come from Chennai, born & brought up here. I completed my BE in 2002 and joined a telecom PSU by clearing the all-India competitive exam. I worked in the PSU for 17 years till Sep 2020. In between, I did my M.Tech in Software Systems from BITS, Pilani in 2017. I wanted to move into an alternate career in the private sector and work in new-age technology.
I was working in a PSU and had just quit the job in Sep 2020. I joined PGP DSBA in Oct 2020 batch.
My biggest challenge was upskilling myself on a technological front as most of my work in the previous organization was administrative in nature.
I was looking for a career transition as I wanted to work in current technology, with a vibrant team where my skills can be explored to the fullest. The transition journey started with me joining the PGP DSBA. I was fully focused on achieving my goals, so a lot of hard work went in. The program was also an intensive and well-structured one.
Various hands-on projects that were a part of the program helped me in this journey. And the mentoring sessions helped me to understand the concepts better. The curriculum and mentor support improved my subject knowledge and boosted my confidence.
I feel very happy and excited that I was able to achieve the target that I had set when I quit my previous job. It was a dream come true. From here, I would like to keep growing technically in the chosen field and become a thought leader in the field of Data Science and machine learning.
I would suggest that people strongly believe that a career transition is possible in the first place. Next, I would advise them to freeze on the subject of their choice and focus wholeheartedly on the goal that they have set for themselves. Finally, I would suggest that they network well and look out for opportunities with a keen eye.
