Here are five core points about the STEM OPT Visa program:
Extension of Optional Practical Training
STEM OPT is an extension of the regular Optional Practical Training (OPT) program, which permits F-1 students to work in their field of study in the U.S. for up to 12 months after completing their degree.
Eligibility
To qualify for STEM OPT, students must have completed a degree in a STEM field from a U.S. institution accredited by the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP). The degree must be at least a bachelor's level or higher.
Training Plan
Students must work for an employer that meets certain requirements and must submit a formal training plan to their Designated School Official (DSO).
Reporting Requirements
STEM OPT participants are required to report certain information to their DSO, including changes in employment, employer name and address, and evaluations of their progress in the program.
EAD (Employment Authorization Document)
Once approved for STEM OPT, students receive an updated EAD card, which serves as proof of their legal work status in the U.S.
