Braving the unknown: The first step into Data Science

Data Science

Stepping into the world of data can feel overwhelming, especially for those unfamiliar with numbers, programming languages, and algorithms. But if you take the first step, the journey from being an outsider to becoming proficient in Data Science is not just possible–it’s transformative.

Here are the stories of a few individuals who embraced data despite having no background in Data Science. They faced their fears, put in effort, and came out with newfound confidence and skills. Their journeys demonstrate the power of determination and proper guidance.

Let’s hear from Kavuma Douglas, Adriana Villa Aguilar, and Oluwayinka O. Iseyemi, who achieved success in Data Science despite starting with little to no experience.

Kavuma Douglas: Turning Fear into Confidence

Kavuma Douglas

When Kavuma Douglas first considered entering the world of Data Science, the thought was daunting. Douglas comes from a non-technical background with over 11 years of experience in retail fashion and FMCG, yet the thought of tackling programming, math, and statistics felt overwhelming to him. But in today’s data-driven world, he knew that staying relevant meant acquiring new skills and knowledge in Data Science.

Sharing his experience, Douglas says,
“I come from a non-tech background, so enrolling in a program that required programming, math, and statistics was a bit intimidating for me. But we live in a data-driven world, and to stay on top of your game, you need to equip yourself with the proper knowledge and tools. This inspired me to choose Data Science, and I can proudly say that it’s by far the best decision of my life.”

Douglas’ extensive experience in sales, merchandising in the FMCG sector provided a solid foundation, but he credits the hands-on tools and resources of the DSBA program for helping him translate his knowledge into actionable insights. With the support of dedicated mentors and flexible learning schedules, he transformed his initial fear into confidence, using Data Science to optimize strategies and drive impactful business decisions.

‘If you have the willingness and desire to achieve something, nothing can stop you. Never stop learning,’ Douglas concludes, proving that with the right support, even the most intimidating challenges can be overcome

Adriana Villa Aguilar: From Curiosity to a Career

Adriana Villa Aguilar

For Adriana Villa Aguilar, the world of Data Science seemed distant and unfamiliar. She had no experience and had only taken a few online courses, which did not provide her with the practical, hands-on approach she needed. When a friend recommended the program, she decided to enroll, which proved to be a game-changer for her.

“I had no previous experience with Data Science. I took some online programs, but none of them had the top-notch, hands-on projects that let you apply and wrap up what was learned in a real-life business scenario. That’s what I loved about this program—it made me feel ready to pursue a career in Data Science.”

The carefully structured lessons and hands-on projects made the learning experience engaging for her. She also credits the real-world application of concepts with giving her the confidence to seek new career opportunities in the field.

“If you want to enter the world of Data Science, this program is the right path. You just need to put in the time and effort, and you will come out with the skills you need.”

Oluwayinka O. Iseyemi: Transition from Uncertainty to Expertise

Oluwayinka O. Iseyemi

Oluwayinka O. Iseyemi is an ecologist  working at the Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality. She has done her Postdoctoral Research Fellowship from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Agriculture Research Service. She had a minor in statistics from college, but she never felt fully confident applying her skills to solve real business problems. Transitioning into Data Science seemed like a natural next step, but it wasn’t until she joined the program that she truly felt empowered.

“The program raised my confidence in my transition to becoming a Data Scientist. Despite having a minor in statistics, I wasn’t sure about the practical application of the knowledge. After completing the program, I have gained skills and become confident that I can provide data-driven solutions to help organizations.”

For Oluwayinka, the program was more than just a series of lessons—it was a confidence-building journey. Her extensive experience in providing data-driven solutions for environmental management practices gained a fresh perspective through the program’s practical projects and expert mentorship.

Douglas, Adriana, and Oluwayinka’s stories prove that with the proper guidance and learning structure, one can conquer the world of data, regardless of background. If you’ve ever felt uncertain about pursuing a career in Data Science, find inspiration in these learners.
