Data Science and Analytics is growing rapidly. Upskilling in this field can be a great way to power ahead your career. Read further to learn about Sujay Bhalchandra Tambe’s journey with Great Learning’s PGP Data Science and Business Analytics in his own words.
I am an Electrical Engineer with 15 years of experience in the Oil and Gas Industry. Have worked on Mid-Level Managerial roles in Manufacturing, Reliability, and Project domains.
I was working for an Oil and Gas Major and supporting Oil and Gas in Maintenance related Work Processes.
The challenge was to take up a course and see it through completion especially for a course which is spanning almost a year. I was thoroughly committed to add the in-demand skills and use the Pandemic (more me time) to add value and create a competitive advantage for myself.
While I was doing some research on the courses and curriculum offered by different institutes, I found GL’s PGP-DSBA curriculum started from the basics (which was important for somebody with no coding background) and covered all the in-demand skills. Also, the course was well spread out and well organized. GL’s collaboration with the University of Austin was also an added advantage.
I wanted to enroll in the classroom course when I did the inquiry so I had some apprehensions regarding the online medium but the GL Program Managers gave good guidance and also set up telephonic calls with members of past batches, this helped to address the doubts.
The online mentoring sessions were very well organized. The Topic for the session, session timing, relevant course, and expectations regarding learning content was shared well in advance. The mentors created a very good atmosphere and encouraged asking questions during the sessions and were more than willing to go overtime so that full justice was done to the session and no question was left unanswered. These sessions were important because they helped to cement the understanding of the concepts taught in the online videos.
The mentors were senior professionals and Data science practitioners that helped immensely. Though the mentors used to discuss the topics covered in the online videos, it wasn’t a repetition. The student exercises were solved hands-on during the mentoring session, all the doubts were addressed in the session and even if there were doubts one could reach out to the mentor after the session to get clarification.
All the mentors played a crucial role in my success in the program. The mentors were available at all times to clarify doubts and also suggested some good references, books if one wanted to explore a topic in more detail.
I have used the DS tools extensively in my role. Built dashboards to get insights, created the datasets, cleaned the dataset, performed EDA, and built ML Models to solve real-life business problems. The application of these concepts and tools has been acknowledged and appreciated by my superiors and peers. In addition to the skills, I think the various projects and discussions with Mentors have helped me to develop Business Acumen which is key to understanding the problems and then solving them using the tools.
The role of Analytics and its application is going to increase by the day and it may well be a key differentiator amongst peers going forward. And as it is said the secret in getting ahead is in getting started so “START”.
