The application of Data Science and Business Analytics is no longer limited to a particular industry. Every sector is reaping the benefits of the advancements in Data Science and Business Analytics. Learn more about how P. Renukadevi was able to benefit from Great Learning’s PGP Data Science and Business Analytics Course in her own words.
I am working as Assistant Professor in a B-School. I teach statistics to management students. I have completed my Masters in Statistics and MBA(Finance). I am currently pursuing my PhD in Management. My areas of interest are Portfolio Management, Behavioural Finance, Business Analytics etc. My passion has always been teaching. So before and after joining PGP-DSBA, I am into teaching only. But my perspective towards teaching Statistics to Management students has changed a lot with this course.
Before joining the program, my role in my organization was very limited. I had very little opportunity to showcase the role of analytics in business decision making. The application of analytics was underestimated. As Marketing, Finance, HR, Operations and systems were considered as domains of Management Education, Statistics and analytics were just a part of the education system.
After joining the course, applying the learnt concepts in different real life scenarios, attending industrial session delivered by experts, and constant support from my mentors helped me overcome the above challenges and now we are planning to offer Business analytics as one of the domains in management education in our institution.
Due to the challenges faced by me in my career, I decided to do a professional course in analytics. That’s when I was introduced to Great Learning by my Father who is also an experienced Professor in the field of Statistics.
Greatlearning is a great platform to learn Data Science. The incredible support from my program managers made it a cake walk. Due to the content quality, expertise of the professors and mentors and support from program managers, I am motivated to join another course with GL. I am also pursuing the AIML course. I have also completed a few free certificate courses offered in GL academy.
Mentoring sessions are very effective. The expertise of my mentor Mr. Shohel is evident in each and every session. He meticulously planned the sessions and never failed to clear any doubts, be it a simple question or a very complicated application oriented question. He was always available to clear out doubts even out of mentoring sessions. I have started following some of his strategies in my teachings also. The mentoring session laid the easy path for us to complete the modules easily and do the assignments with ease. It is nothing less than excellent. Every mentor who ever taught us during the session was well prepared and they were at their toes to clear any doubt.
With my newly learned skills, I have helped my management in several decision making scenarios like understanding the key skills required to offer in the placement training. This, I was able to comprehend with the help of Text mining tools. I have started applying the concepts learned in the course to some of my clients. I, with the help of recommendation system, help some of my retail store customers to understand the most in-demand products, products to be bundled, discount strategies to be followed etc., I have started using Time series analysis in my research works. It’s more like, I am using data science in all walks of my life.
My humble advice to anyone joining this course is to learn the concepts clearly. Make best use of mentoring sessions to clear all your doubts and build on whatever learned in pre-recorded sessions. Start applying even a small concept learned in your workplace. Only through application can we understand more and we can retain the learning. Attend all industry sessions, so that we will know the actual real life applications of learned concepts.
In the initial stage, look more for intangible benefits you reap out of the course than for the tangible benefits. Eventually the ROI will be tremendous, more than what you had anticipated.
