Taking the first step towards upskilling may seem quite intimidating. But it is surely worth the effort. Read further to learn about Abhijith’s journey with Great Learning’s PGP Data Science and Business Analytics Course in his own words.
Being a B.com graduate, my first work opportunity was with McKinsey & Company during their campus hiring drive. I was hired as a Business Presentation Specialist and then worked my way up to being a Coach. My role primarily involved daily interactions with global consultants to help them conceptualize their ideas and findings into visually appealing, impactful business presentations. After working on the visualization end for 3.5 years, I was selected to coach/train new hires in our new office location, where my primary responsibilities were to foster each new hire into an independent contributor within a time period of 6-10 months.
Making the decision about selecting which course/institution served in my best interest while aligning with my career aspirations was my biggest professional decision so far.
During my tenure with McK, I became more aware of analytics as I could see the positive impact of data-driven decisions in various sectors. This is where I was intrigued by data analytics which sparked an interest to learn more about it. At the same time, I wanted to move into a more impact-oriented job.
It was difficult. Since I did not have professional experience in analytics, which essentially made me a fresher. The career transition took a lot of patience and determination, but I finally managed to get great placement. I went through 3 rounds of interviews during the process spanned across a month.
The zeal of constantly wanting to learn more gave me the motivation I needed. Analytics is the kind of field that continuously presents you with new learnings and opportunities with endless possibilities of arriving at a solution. That’s what kept me going. My loved ones and GL faculties were a big support to me as well.
The curriculum in Great Learning was well designed, intricately crafted in a way that met all the educational needs of a new student in analytics. Not only the educational material but also regularly timed projects & hackathons gave us the necessary hands-on experience. A special mention to the career mentorship offered to us by industry experts ensured support during every step of the way, including resume & interview prep.
Now firstly, I am elated and excited for what’s to come. I am eager to learn and explore new & innovative ways of solving problems with impactful solutions.
To those aspiring to make a career transition, I would like to say don’t hesitate to take the first step towards your career transition. Making the first move, the first decision serves as a big push into the journey ahead. And lastly, persistence really pays off.
