While making a shift in the career may seem like an uphill battle, the right guidance can prove to be extremely beneficial. Here’s how Jebby John, an Ex-Merchant Navy officer, made a shift in his career with the help of our PGP – Data Science and Engineering course. (Now this program has become Data Science Course with Gen AI program)
Can you tell us about your background and work experience?
I am an Ex-Merchant Naval officer. I had to take voluntary retirement due to family commitments. After retirement, I was looking for new opportunities in the IT sector. I thought I could learn Data Science in particular because I found it to be interesting. This is when I stumbled upon Great Learning through a friend who is an alumnus of Great Learning.
How was your experience with the PGP – DSE course?
Coming from a non-technical background, I always thought that making a transition to Data Science was going to be an uphill battle for me. It involves extensive programming and a deep understanding of different tools. But to my surprise, this battle was made easy because of the great set of in-house and visiting faculties Great Learning provided. I am not someone who is impressed by the extensive branding. For me, content, curriculum and teaching faculties are important. Great Learning provided me with all of the above. Overall, I would say I had a great experience.
How was the mentorship provided?
The placement team put in a lot of effort and ensured that I was ready to attend interviews. They groomed and prepared me for the face to face interviews. I started applying to companies about 1 month before the course officially ended and was able to get offers from two good companies. I accepted one of the offers and I am proud to say I’m now a Data Scientist at Knowledge lens Pvt Ltd. It’s been 2 weeks since I joined, it is still an uphill battle for me. But the difference this time is that I’m prepared for it. The mentorship team played a major role in ensuring that I was able to achieve this success.
I hope my story serves, if not as an inspiration, at least a guidance to others similar to me.
