Recruiters are now actively looking for Data Science Talent. Upskilling in this industry can prove to be extremely beneficial. Read further to learn more about Vinay’s journey with Great Learning’s PGP Data Science and Business Analytics Course in his own words.
I am a mechanical engineer with around 18 years of experience in the automotive industry. I have all along been in the manufacturing setup. I had no knowledge or even a passing experience of computer programming. Personally, I have wide interests in wild life – be it on land or in the sea, astronomy and sports.
In my work space, we do deal with a lot of data like warranty, in-house rejections and direct pass numbers. There are also times when we use a bit of basic statistics for process monitoring. But our analysis or exploration stops at visualization of these numbers which of course is important, but is incomplete.
As I mentioned before, we had lots of data and we stopped at visualizations. I was unable to make any more sense of beyond these visualizations or draw any kind of insight to make these numbers better. This was my biggest challenge in my work space and this made me feel that there is an opportunity here to understand the data better and contribute to improvements.
I went through the courses of many institutes and also the pace of learning. Great learning provided what looked to me a balanced program. This made me interested in taking up this course. Learning in a structured way after a long gap was itself a daunting task and the online medium which was absolutely new to me did cause a lot of apprehensions. But, the discussion with Great Learning staff and also the family did help me to take the leap.
During learning, getting into a conversation with a teacher / mentor will make the learning much easier and deep. I consider these mentored sessions the best part of my learning experience of this course. Mentoring sessions are top class in this program. This is where you actually understand all that you have seen in the videos better. I was lucky to have a great mentor in Mr. Animesh Tiwari who was there to explain the underlying concepts, their applications and the way it is done lucidly. Special thanks to him. Without his mentoring, it would have been very difficult to understand data science. I looked forward to these mentoring sessions and never missed them. I believe it is just the beginning. From the knowledge I have gained from this course there is a lot more to explore be it in my professional space or in my personal hobbies.
My advice to budding learning analysts is – learn well, dive deep and understand the concepts and their present applications. Once you have learnt well, explore different areas – some could be absolutely new.
Only one last thing to my program manager – Thank you very much and keep up the good work.
