The job chasing process can take you into a rollercoaster of emotions. Right from searching for a job and applying for it and then keeping a track of the status of the job application can sometimes get you on your nerves. And then the hiring process, which is way more lengthy and can drag on for weeks. And now you have applied which you know you are a perfect fit for! And also meet all the requirements and the nice to have and you are feeling confident that you will hear something or the other back from the hiring manager in no time. But three days pass and your inbox are empty, a week goes by and still the same. And then you decide you need to follow up. We can say that this process is not mandatory but following up can reveal your interest in the position and help you stick out from the other candidates. So let’s discuss in what ways you can follow up on your job application.

4 ways to follow up on your job application

1. We would recommend through Email: This process is the most appreciated or we can say the most preferred way to have a follow up with the hiring manager. According to a recent survey, the majority of the recruiters have indicated that the best way to follow up after an application is via email.  Email is one of the best methods for reaching out to follow up, where you express how interested you are in the given role, along with it you are also respectful of your contact’s times. Set down a few short sentences together thanking them for their time in reading your application and also ask them if they have any queries regarding your resume or your credentials. We know not all hiring managers send a reply, but a follow-up email shows how passionate you are about this role. This act will just build a difference between you and a candidate who might have applied to have similar credentials. And make sure you send the mail from a professional sounding email address and a good subject line. An email from playboy18@emailaddress.com  having a subject line of “call me back soon” would never receive any reply.

2. Then we would recommend you to follow up via social network:  If you have directly spoken to the hiring manager or you have the name of the recruiter, then it’s completely justifiable to talk to them via social networks. And this is not only one of the best ways to collaborate with the recruiters, and it’s also a good opportunity for you to exhibit the size of your network and your position within the company. But just be cautious when it comes to choosing your methods of communication. For instance, adding them on LinkedIn is fine, but following them on Facebook may not be…

3. Then you can have a follow up via phone: Here we come to a direct approach, maybe in the first instance it might seem unwelcomed to phone the recruiter for feedback, but in several industries, it can be an excellent manner to show your resourcefulness. For instance job positions for sales or PR, the hiring managers frequently welcome phone calls from the applicant since it exhibits that you are confident enough when it comes to communicating with your client. And when it comes to what to say to have a conversation, it can be simple as asking whether they have received your application and enquiring when they are looking to make their selection. And if you have been ineffective, ask them for feedback and thank them for their time. And if they haven’t made their selection yet? Then you have just ensured that your application is instantly more significant.

4. Last but not least you can have a follow up via letter: It may seem outmoded, but putting down a personal feel on your application is a good way to demonstrate your commitment. All you need are a few short lines to reiterate why you are the right person for the position and a well-mannered thank you for their kind consideration. It’s as easy as that. 

And if you are confused as to when to have a follow-up, try to follow up between 05 and 10 working days. And if you had a screen sharing, or a job interview has done then try to follow within 3-5 days and thank them for their time and effort. Be polite and kind and professional in your response. We know, not having a hear back from the recruiter can be quite annoying, but we can deal with this.
