Upskilling can help you advance your career and undergo career transitions as well. Read further to learn more about Samrat’s journey with Great Learning’s PGP Data Science and Business Analytics in his own words.
I have completed my M.Sc. in Physics from Calcutta University, followed by PGDM in HR and Marketing from FORE School of Management, New Delhi. I joined my first organization, a multinational IT and consultancy services provider; through campus recruitment. For 3.5 years I have been involved in several internal and client facing roles in data analytics and data visualization as a business analyst.
In the course of my work, I had the opportunity to develop programming and data visualization skills through several hands-on projects.
I felt a need to upskill myself so that I would not have to be constrained to specific roles. I wanted to develop a fairly comprehensive understanding of data science and machine learning concepts; leveraging my knowledge of and interest in Python/R programming.
After more than 3 years in my first organization, I was motivated to seek a transition in order to enable growth both personally and professionally. I felt I was in a position to utilize the experience and skills I had gained and use them as a launching pad for a more fruitful and fulfilling career trajectory.
The entire transition was a great experience as I got to discuss my experiences and skill sets through several interview rounds.
I have experienced that being able to confidently describe your role, the projects you have been involved with and the challenges you have faced; as well as your professional interests; is crucial for a successful transition.
The PGP-DSBA curriculum has enriched my programming and machine learning knowledge; additionally, the curriculum has also provided me a platform to further build on my experience in data analytics and visualization. I feel that being involved in this program is an immense value addition for anyone applying for a data science role and it has been the same for me.
I am excited to continue my journey in data science; and I also wish to keep on upskilling myself because learning to me is not just useful professionally but also enjoyable and fulfilling.
I would advise everyone seeking similar transitions to be confident, patient and play to their strengths. Also, relevant experience has no substitute and should be complemented with additional learnings to strengthen your personal brand.
