In today’s constantly evolving environment, it is important to upskill to power ahead your career. Read further to learn about Arvind Krishna Murthy’s journey with Great Learning’s PGP Data Science and Business Analytics Course in his own words.
I am Arvind Krishna Murthy, 43 year of age, localised Bangalorean. I come from a family of teachers who have dedicated their entire professional career to teaching. A Mechanical Engineer, who switched over to the IT Industry sometime way back in 2001 accumulating loads of experience wherever I worked. I am currently employed with CME Group as Lead Operational Excellence Analyst.
I have been an avid marathoner for the past 6 years, then this pandemic happened and changed my style of marathon from running to reading. During the pandemic I became a book worm & have read about 15 books over the year (of course the Great Learning On-line material as well). This has made a huge impact in recent days. PGP- DSBA is my first long term (11 months) program post my engineering.
Most of my colleagues in the office were good at Python and it was my desire to learn the language and work on some or the other automations to be able to retain knowledge & improvise. I needed something that would help me just not learn Python but also something more. With this fast moving technology era, I wanted to be able to do something of a value add that my company would be able to leverage in the long term.
The desire to learn Python prompted me to search for something related and also at the same time it has to have an impact that would boost my career. That is when I connected with my colleagues to make a choice. I was highly impressed with the feedback given about Great Learning’s On-line program from a few of my colleagues who had taken up the course. I believe this was the best opportunity for me to learn Python and also something different like Data Science & Business Analytics together, that would help my career.
Great Learning gave me the flexibility of the classes on weekends with my preferred day and time, which immensely helped. The learning throughout the week was also not that taxing and never hindered my office work/schedule.
The concepts that were being taught were well scripted and orchestrated. The examples, the pace of recording, the content was very simple and understandable. The quiz after every topic within the module was like an added bonus. It helped understand the minute detail related to the topic. These were very important clues that helped in solving the CAPSTONE Project very effectively. Mentors during the weekend classes helped clear any/all doubts related to that specific topic. They were also highly flexible and extended their sessions as per our convenience. The mentoring class was the icing on the cake.
The real time example in mentor sessions made the session worthwhile and the company insights from the mentor also boosted our confidence over the period of time. On a scale of 1-10 with 1= lowest and 10 = highest, I would rate my mentor as 10. She was the epitome of patience and knew all the questions before we asked, and could clear our doubts with ease. Currently I have completed my CAPSTONE Project which was based on Predictive Analysis. I believe this project will help me ascertain a certain type of problem at my office and provide the best possible solution in the long term.
Videos all along the course will help you gain all the key insights to the learnings. Go through them at least 2-3 times in case you are unable to grasp it all at once. No doubt is stupid or silly. Mentoring sessions are for doubt clearing. Mentors have vast experience and knowledge, make the best use of their time and knowledge. They share their experience and make you confident and wiser module-on-module.
Domain knowledge is very essential. Industry sessions are best to understand the current scenario & domain. Please attend all of them even though you may not understand them fully at first, but you will appreciate it later during your final project.
Python with Data Science is easy to grasp and less time consuming. Analytics at all stages is easy, provided you practice it.
